eastern yoga in a western world
Hi, I'm Sue Smith and I've been teaching Astanga Vinyasa yoga for the past 6 years. I have studied with all the masters such as David Swenson, John Scott, Danny Paradise and even Patthabi Jois himself. I even had the pleasure of the late Derek Ireland's honourable instruction. I believe in teaching step by step so that the basics are in place before moving on to more difficult postures and techniques. In today's busy world people are stiff and tired and some are finding a way to help themselves gain that sense of inner peace and serenity through yoga. But so many are getting bored and injured because they are taking classes that are too advanced for them. I assess all my students so that they take the class that is most suitable for them. I also provide hands on instruction so that my students know how it feels when they are doing it correctly.
You don't have to become a vegetarian or start chanting mantras or wear hippy clothes, but of course you can if you want to. I want my students to be able to integrate their yoga practice into their modern lives without trying to transplant an Eastern tradition in a Western context. I teach yoga and an not Indian culture.
I also believe in having fun. Yoga doesn't have to be serious and stiff upper lip. Wear a silly hat if you like. We spend most of our time being serious anyway. This is an opportunity to relax, recuperate and let go of the everyday pressures of life.
